Atoms and their electrons. Chemical reactions through a simple analogy |
The videos and worksheets below will take you through the analogy of atoms as apartment buildings, with different levels (energy levels), each with a different number of spaces for tenants (electrons). This analogy, albeit simplistic, is excellent in introducing the reason why atoms combine together in chemical reactions. It introduces the desire for atoms to attain energy efficiency through the giving and taking as well as sharing of electrons. Molecular formulas, covalent and ionic bonding, as well as structural formula, can easily be introduced. Start by viewing video 1 below. |
Video 1 -"The Atom" - This video introduces the structure of an atom and how each neutral atom in nature looks to become 100% energy efficient. This forms the basis of chemical reactions. Here, the idea that atoms can give or take electrons is covered, but the phrase "ionic bonding" is explicitly omitted as to not introduce new terminology, however, teachers are encouraged to introduce the term "ionic" if they feel students can handle it. |
Video 2 -"The Atom sharing electrons"- This video continues with the analogy and introduces the concept of electron sharing between non-metal atoms. Here, the idea that atoms can share electrons to produce diverse everyday compounds is covered. The phrase "covalent bonding" is explicitly omitted as to not introduce new terminology, however, teachers are encouraged to introduce the term "covalent" if they feel students can handle it. |
Video 3 -"The Atom Game"- This video continues with the analogy and introduces the atom game. Here students use their knowledge of atoms and the way they interact with each other through their electrons to compete in a card game. The aim of the game is to show knowledge of chemical bonding but also display dexterity in gamesmanship to ultimately win the game.
